Upapada and Marriage {Part – 1}

Introduction – in chapter 1 pada 4 in Jaimini Sutramritam sage Jaimini gives us a Shloka “upapadam padam pitranucharat” literally this Shloka means “upapada is the one who is pitra-anuchar of pada” this can be translated in various ways and scholars also did so. Shri Sanjay Rath, K.N.Rao, Dr Suresh Chandra Mishra says it is Arudh Pada of 12^th house from lagna. Whereas Mahamahopadhyaya Irangnati Rangacharya also uses the same interpretation but he takes 12^th house as Anuchar in male horoscope and 2^nd house as Anuchar in female horoscope based on Prakriti chakra whereas scholars like Sitaram Jha, Girish Chandra Sharma says it is Arudh of 5^th house as it is anuchar of lagna. Anuchar means the one following lagna.   If we see it astronomically 2^nd Rashi is following the Rashi in lagna as after lagna 2^nd house Rashi will rise. But if we count normally then we find 12^th house is following ascendant as the count in normal horoscopy based on Udaya Chakra. Whereas those opining 5^th house says as Child (5^th house) follows father (ascendant/you) Arudh of 5^th house have to be Upapada. Whereas Rangacharya Ji based on gender of the native under question uses Prakriti chakra and finds upapada from 12^th house. Both Parashar and Jaimini said it is Anuchar and we are not clear about what Anuchar means here and in that case we have to go by our own experiences as sages haven’t said anything clearly and elders have difference of opinion on this.

Arudh – calculation of Arudh also have some divergent views due to two shlokas of sage Jaimini “Swasteh Dara” “Sutaste Janmah” here there are several interpretation some says it means when Lagna lord is in ascendant Arudh will be in 10^th house, when lagna lord is in 4^th Arudh will be in 4^th house,  when lagna lord is in 7^th Arudh will be in 10^th house and when Lagna lord is in 10^th Arudh will be in 4^th house this method if supported by Shri Sanjay Rath and Dr Suresh Chandra Mishra where Shri K.N.Rao says when lagna lord is in lagna, lagna itself is Arudh. When lagna lord is in 4^th 7^th house is the Arudh when lagna lord is in 7^th lagna becomes Arudh and when lagna lord is in 10^th 7^th house becomes Arudh. In this we can clearly see in K.N.Rao method 4^th and 10^th house won’t have Arudh whereas in Sanjay Rath’s interpretation lagna and 7^th house won’t have Arudh.  Sanjay Rath says lagna and 7^th is Satya Peetha signifying truth and as Arudh is Maya it can’t be in these houses where K.N.Rao don’t provide us any logic and says it is his research based on teachings of North Indian Astrologers. “I do follow method of Shri Sanjay Rath as indirectly I am his student” but in this article we will see all views. Also Sanjay Rath opines that as Scorpio is ruled by Ketu and Mars and Aquarius by Saturn and Rahu if these signs falls in 12^th stronger lord should be chosen to find upapada and if one lord is in 12^th house then exception comes and another lord have to be chosen to find upapada. Whereas Shriman Iranganti Rangacharya says follow K.N.Rao method in Fixed and Movable ascendant whereas follow Sanjay Rath method in Dual signs ascendant.

Different method of calculation

Shri Sanjay Rath – Arudh of 12^th house is upapada, in case of Scorpio there are 2 lords Ketu and Mars and in case of Aquarius there are two lords Saturn and Rahu and to find Arudh stronger between them have to be chosen based on strength calculations provided by sage jaimini which is

1. Planet conjoined with more number of planets is stronger
2. Planet aspects by Jupiter, Mercury, and Sign lord are stronger
   3. Planet in high dignity is stronger (exaltation-own house)
   4. Dual signs are powerful than Fixed signs and Fixed signs are stronger than Movable signs
3. planets with higher degrees traversed in a sign is stronger

Here next rule have to be applied only in the case where previous rule fails to decide stronger planet

Exception – if any lord between the two is placed in the sign then ignoring that lord another lord needs to be chosen.

1. Lord in same house gives Arudh in 10^th house
2. Lord in 4^th house gives Arudh in 4^th house
3. Lord in 7^th house gives Arudh in 10^th house
4. Lord in 10^th house gives Arudh in 4^th house

Shri K.N.Rao – Arudh of 12^th house is upapada. All signs have normal lords with no two lord’s scheme for Aquarius and Scorpio

1. Lord in same house gives Arudh in same house
2. Lord in 4^th house gives Arudh in 7^th house
3. Lord in 7^th house gives Arudh in Lagna
4. Lord in 10^th house gives Arudh in 7^th house

Mahamahopadhyaya Irangnati Rangacharya – in male horoscope if lagna or its 7^th house whichever is stronger, is the odd sign, the Arudh of 12^th of lagna or 7^th house becomes Upapada (rules for strength is the same as provided earlier) if lagna or its 7^th house whichever is stronger is an even sign the Arudh of 12^th of its Sanmukha sign becomes Upapada
Sanmukha Sign – is the another sign occupied by same lord with exception to Saturn

In female horoscope if lagna or its 7^th house whichever is stronger is even sign the Arudh of its 2^nd house becomes upapada. If lagna or 7^th house whichever is stronger is odd sign then 2^nd house of its Sanmukha Sign becomes Upapada. He also doesn’t consider dual lordship for Aquarius and Scorpio.

1. He uses normal reckoning as provided by Shri K.N.Rao in cases of Movable and fixed
2. And Method as provided by Shri Sanjay Rath in case of Dual signs modifying it as per oddity of rising sign based on Prakriti chakra that says in even signs counting have to be reversed and in odd signs direct counting. (readers should see examples carefully to see how it is applied)

Other’s views – there are some scholars who says 5^th house Arudh becomes Upapada lagna and they also use exceptions as provided by Shri Sanjay Rath with no dual lordship rules for Scorpio and Aquarius

Rules of interpretation – people who have read classics knows that sages in classics mention yoga’s and we have to understand principles lying behind them and then based on that we can judge effects. It is because classics have been written in traditional style where teachers write something for a student which has already spent ample time reading with him. So student just see the yoga and understand what is the principle sage/teacher is saying. In this way in less number of shlokas more rules can be said rather than saying effects of all planets in Upapada sages have said some combinations and then left us to read them carefully and build principles.

1. Upapada shows marriage is the basic fundamental thing (as sage says Upapada can give both marriage and renunciation – absence of marriage) also with this we can see quality of marriage, quality of spouse and also all other things related to marriage and it’s denial as sage said
2. 2^nd house is sustenance for anything like 2^nd is food from ascendant which sustains us and 2^nd is also maraka shows death that can happen due to lack of nutrition. Thus 2^nd house from upapada shows longevity of marriage it’s break
3. 7^th house from Upapada shows opposition (as 7^th is opposite to any house) it shows people opposing marriage (if there is sun it is father in law opposing marriage) it also your qualities due to which your spouse liked/married you
4. 8^th house is death and shows death of this upapada (marriage) and start of a new one.
5. 12^th house from Upapada shows the one which won’t be able to see marriage/rise of upapada.

These are the rules we get from tradition of Shri Sanjay Rath Ji. (as he said in his books, conferences) and expending them we can see all house from Upapada as we will see in example charts readers are requested to see analysis/interpretation of example charts carefully.

In this article we will be using Shri Sanjay Rath Method and in other articles we will explore other methods.

Example charts

Native 1 – Jawahar Lal Nehru
14^th November 1889, 11:30PM, Allahabad

He married Kamala Kaul in February 8 1916; she died on February 28 1936 (Tuberculosis)

In Rashi chart 12^th house if Gemini whose lord is in 4^th house with Venus making Upapada Lagna in Aquarius (count as many signs from sign lord as much as it is away from the sign here he is 5 houses away from 12^th house 5^th house from mercury Aquarius will become upapada lagna)

Between Saturn and Rahu. Rahu is stronger who is exalted in 12^th house he married but 2^nd lord from UL (Jupiter) is in his house which is 6^th from Lagna (disease) with Ketu (break/separation) Jupiter is afflicted by Rashi Drishti of Mars and Rahu. (Death is seen in 3^rd from Arudh) and 3^rd from UL is aspected by Saturn showing death from disease.

This chart is having Dwisaptati-Sama dasa applicable as 7^th lord is in ascendant and his marriage happened in Jupiter-Jupiter-Venus (8 February 1916) Jupiter is lord of 2^nd from UL (Sustenance) and is in 11^th (gains) from UL. Venus is aspecting UL being in 9^th (protection from it) marriage lasted for 20 years (before her death) and in Vimshottari Dasa Venus gives a period of 20 years. Looking back to Jupiter he is in mutual aspect with UL lord Rahu both Rashi and Graha Drishti.

Wife Died – Saturn-Rahu-Saturn (28 February 1936) Saturn is aspecting 3^rd from UL (Reason of death and death) and Rahu is lord of UL afflicting 2^nd from UL and lord of 2^nd from UL. Saturn is also in 7^th from UL opposition. TB is shown by Rahu who is the reason for break in marriage (most powerful malefic afflicting 2^nd house and lord from UL)

Shool Dasa – this dasa have to be seen for death and on 28^th February 1936 dasa was (Sagittarius-Capricorn) stronger between lord of 2^nd house and 8^th house becomes Rudra responsible for death and from 7^th house of wife Rudra is Rahu (Strong lord of 8^th house that is 2^nd from 7^th house) who is aspecting Sagittarius from Rashi Drishti along with another malefic Mars. Weaker lord between 2^nd and 8^th house from any house becomes Aprani Rudra and if he is afflicted then he can also kill. Here Aprani Rudra is Sun but he is not afflicted but mixed with combined influence of another Prani Rudra Saturn (Aquarius have dual lordship) he killed in Capricorn AD which is aspected by both Aprani Rudra (Sun) {Shool Dasa can be used to time death for any relative using the same principles of sign aspected by Prani and Aprani Rudra, Sign having Rudra yoga (Moon + Mars/Moon+Venus) or signs aspecting Death houses (8^th house or 3^rd from concerned Arudh)

Native 2 – Swami Vivekananda

12^th January 1863, 06:33AM, Kolkata

He never married and was a saint.

12^th house is Scorpio having Dual lordship of Mars and Ketu, here ketu is strongest being aspected by Mercury, Jupiter and sign lord Venus making Upapada Lagna in Leo afflicted by Gulika and Maandi (malefic impact on UL shows denial of marriage) aspected by Venus, Mercury, Jupiter and Mars in between them Mars is malefic and other should be promoting marriage but as lord of Upapada is Sun in lagna being Atmakarak he never got indulged in this physical ties of marriage and relationship and chosen the divine way of self-realization (Sun AK in lagna/intelligence) every chart having same combination shows denial of marriage? Off-course no! Then why this case? What makes this chart special? See in the chart Shashti-Hayani Dasa is applicable (Sun in lagna – prime consideration for the dasa) now charts being applicable for a special dasa is born to do something special (as parashara have said special conditions where these will be applicable – so we need to see governor/cause of the dasa) here it is Sun (AK) in lagna intelligence giving Argala to lagna lord Jupiter showing his main motive for birth was spirituality and self-realization not normal things.

Sun having Argala on AK/Lagna Lord showing spirituality is ignited in the person.

Native 3 – A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad

1^st September 1896, 15:24, Kolkata

Married when he was 22 years old (1918), wife was 11 years elder, renounced in 1959. Sage Parashar advises to see marriage and renunciation both from upapada. The chart satisfies the conditions for Chaturaseeti-Sama Dasa (10^th lord in 10^th house)

12^th house from ascendant is Scorpio with two lords Mars and Ketu and ketu is stronger being placed with more number of planets giving Upapada in Aquarius. Upapada is having a planet in own house and another lord of UL is exalted showing marriage is there but lord of 2^nd from UL is with Ketu (separation) and he is also GK (Jupiter – lord of 2^nd from UL) showing fight between him and his wife which made him go to renunciation. All this happening in 9^th house of temples and religion with 9^th lord Sun in own house and 2^nd from UL is having A8 (pain and transformation) this shows why after break of marriage he turned towards godhead rather than going for another marriage.

Marriage at 22 (1918) Venus dasa who is Dispositor of stronger lord of UL and is DK. We have choice of Either Saturn or Venus antardasa and we can clearly see that it must have happened in Venus-Saturn.

Renunciation in 1959 – Moon dasa Jupiter/Venus antardasa – antardasa has to be of Jupiter for sure for the reasons said above.  Moon dasa was the reason as Cancer is 6^th from UL.  But it was not a normal break in marriage it was renunciation clear from the fact that Moon is 8^th lord (transformation) with 12^th lord (meditation/thinking of salvation – 12^th and 8^th are Krishna Houses) Mars in 6^th house of Shadripu (conquering them) and mars is also 5^th lord of devotation and bhakti. See the reason for break in marriage is temple and service of god (9^th house) and it happened when bhakti arose (5^th house lord is conjunct Moon Maha dasa lord) Aries is 3^rd from UL showing marriage died forever as he was renunciate now. Moon is AK (Soul calling)

Native 4 – John F. Kennedy

29^th May 1917, 14:51, Brookline/MA/USA

Married on 12^th September 1953, Wife Ascendant – Scorpio, was unfaithful in marriage but marriage lasted till his death (no legal divorce)

12^th lord Sun is in 9^th (10^th from 12^th) giving UL in 3^rd house (4^th from 12^th) and the sign in 3^rd house is Scorpio (ascendant of wife)

No conditional dasa is applicable and as there are three planets in Kendra to Moon as compared to two planets in Kendra to ascendant we should use Chandra Vimshottari.

Marriage 12^th September 1953 – Rahu-Mercury-Jupiter – Rahu is aspecting another lord of UL (Ketu) Mercury is with lord of UL (mars) and is aspecting UL; Jupiter is DK having Graha Drishti on UL.

Native 5 – Loni Anderson

5^th August 1945, 08:32:00, (05:00West) 93W5/44N56

Spouse’s – Bruce Hasselberg (1964-1966), Ross Bickell (1973-1981), Burt Reynolds (1988-1993) Actor, Bob Flick (17 May 2008)

12^th house is Cancer being lorded by Moon who is in 11^th house (12^th from UL) giving UL in 10^th house (11^th from UL)

First Marriage is seen from Taurus (UL1) Second Marriage is seen from Sagittarius (8^th from first UL, UL2) Third Marriage is seen from Cancer (8^th from Second UL, UL3) Fourth Marriage is seen from Aquarius (8^th from Third UL, UL4)

Upapada Lagna is in Taurus 2^nd from that is Gemini a specific combination for multiple marriages.

AstroDatabank gives Rating AA to her birth time. And Venus in navamsa trine shows her beauty (actress) lagna being Vargottama chart is applicable for Saatabdika Dasa

1. First marriage “Bruce Hasselberg (1964-1966)” – marriage and separation both in Venus dasa as we can notice Venus is lord of UL and also in 2^nd from UL not making but giving ignition to multiple marriage yoga.
2. Second marriage “Ross Bickell (1973-1981)” Marriage: Mercury-Saturn Mercury is Dispositor of lord of 2^nd UL and Saturn is aspecting both 2^nd UL and its lord. Separation : Jupiter – Mars, 2^nd UL is having Maandi whose Dispositor is Jupiter and also is Dispositor of Ketu who is in 2^nd UL, Afflicted by aspect of Malefic Saturn, Paksha Bala Heen Moon and Rahu. Antardasa lord Mars is in 6^th from 2^nd UL and is afflicting 2^nd from 2^nd
3. Third Marriage “Burt Reynolds (1988-1993)” Marriage: Jupiter-Saturn, Jupiter is aspecting lord of 3^rd UL (Moon) and Saturn is placed with Moon. Separation: Jupiter-Venus, the same Jupiter is in 3^rd from 3^rd Upapada Cancer showing death of this relationship (peculiar condition it is) {see Condition of DK Jupiter in D1 afflicted by Saturn, Rahu, Malefic Moon and Ketu. Which is also debilitated in navamsa} {this Jupiter keeps her giving relationships and taking it away – DK debilitated in navamsa} Venus is with lord of 4^th UL (Break of 3^rd UL) and is greatly influenced by them. Venus is in 12^th (Loss) from UL3
4. Fourth Marriage “Bob Flick (17 May 2008)” – Mars-Moon-Mars, Moon is with both lords of UL3, Mars is conjunct with stronger lord of UL (Saturn – AK) in navamsa.

Upapada can show almost everything about marriage right from number of children’s (planets in UL trine) to ascendant (trine or 7^th from UL) of spouse, image related to spouse (UL ascendant), siblings of spouse (3^rd – 11^th from UL) see in last case Native 5 two planets in trine to UL (she had 2 children one born and another adopted) Image of spouse see in last case her UL3 is having Sun and is aspected by Mars (Actor) and UL4 aspected by Sun (musician) in last case it was Mars which is digbali in Venusian sign showing actor whereas in 4^th marriage it’s Sun (natural significator of musical instruments)
